Arts Integration Suggestions Using One-Point Perspective
1. Math
Connection: Geometry, Algebra, Measurement
Ideas:
Use one-point perspective to explore vanishing points, parallel lines, and angles.
Calculate scale, proportion, and distance within the perspective drawing.
Introduce the concept of coordinates and spatial relationships using a graphing context.
2. Science
Connection: Physics (light, vision), Environmental Science
Ideas:
Explore optics: how the eye perceives depth and how light travels in straight lines.
Connect to human anatomy: how our vision processes perspective and depth perception.
Design a sustainable city layout using one-point perspective, linking to urban planning and climate-aware design.

Ideas:

Observational Drawing Workshop – Day One: Still Life (35 min)
Welcome & Quick Intro (3 min)
Observation Warm-Up (3 min)
Look around and identify circular or spherical objects.
Describe their shapes aloud.
Exploring Shape with Fruit (2 min)
Observe the fruits and discuss whether they are truly spherical.
Blind Contour Drawing (4 min)
Draw the outline without looking at the paper.
Contour Drawing (4 min)
Look while drawing and focus on the outer edges.
Cross Contour OR Mass Drawing (6 min)
Choose one based on time.
Teacher Introductions + Reflection + Form (10 min)

Observational drawing of spheres and circles can support high school learning across multiple content areas by developing essential skills such as close observation, spatial reasoning, and an understanding of form, proportion, and light. Here’s how it connects to different subjects:
1. Science (Physics, Biology, Chemistry)
Physics: Understanding light, shadow, and reflection on a sphere helps with concepts like the behavior of light, refraction, and optics.
Biology: Sketching biological specimens (cells, eyeballs, fruits) enhances attention to detail, improving scientific observation and documentation skills.
Chemistry: Visualizing molecules and atomic structures, which often appear as spheres, aids in conceptualizing three-dimensional molecular geometry.

Professor Samaras Wood Scrap/Sculpture Professional Development Workshop in New Jersey
On February 11, 2025, Master Teaching Artist Triada Samaras will be presenting a workshop under the auspices of YANJ/EP using wood scrap to connect to sculpture and to other content areas at a one-day conference:
Enhancing Early Childhood Education through Guided Creative Play and the Arts Integration PSEL (Professional Standards and Educational Leaders). Workshop given by the New Jersey Principals and Supervisors Assocation and The Foundation for Educational Administration (NJPSA/FEA).
This includes the use of the New Jersey Arts Integration Think and Do Workbook LINK and NJPSA Arts Integration Guide LINK
Guided Play will feature prominently in this workshop as a means for students to learn in various subject areas and across grades K-3.
Assessment methods will be discussed.

Wood scrap is a perfect medium to have in any classroom for play and to create not only fine art sculptures but to connect to PreK-3 content areas. One of the keys to the successful use of wood scrap for arts and arts integration lessons is the use of language, specifically questions to inspire higher level thinking skills (Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy) (NAEYC link). In addition the close observational skills required in artmaking relate directly to close observation in many other content areas such as science. The 8 Studio Habits of Mind developed at Harvard University naturally link creative play and sculpture making using wood sculpture required in the NJ Visual Art curriculum to other content areas.
In this workshop teachers will learn:
Wood scrap is a flexible and exciting exploration (‘play’) material in the classroom that has multiple benefits.
Wood scrap can be used to introduce artmaking, specifically sculpture, or relief sculpture as a visual arts lesson for grades PreK-3.
Wood scrap sculpture lessons exist within the NJ Visual Arts Curriculum* (Creating, Producing, Responding, Connecting)
Wood scrap can be used in conjunction with higher level thinking skills, specifically Bloom's Revised Taxonomy, to scaffold students’ learning. Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy Action Verbs
Wood scrap sculpture can support social-emotional growth, cognitive learning and integration of curriculum, as well as aesthetic development.
In addition, The 8 Studio Habits of Mind developed at Harvard University correspond to many subject subject areas, not just visual arts.
Wood scrap sculptures can also be used to support Arts Integration practices across the grades and in a variety of subject areas.

Guided and Free Play with Wood
“Loose parts play is a transformative approach to learning and play that empowers children to explore, create, and discover in rich, open-ended environments. By providing materials that spark curiosity and experimentation, we blur the lines between playing and learning, allowing children to take the lead in their own development” LINK
Never use the words: “What is it?” Instead try: “Tell me about what you are doing. What made you think of using wood that way? Did you get any ideas from anyone else at your table? Which ones? Would you explain to your friend sitting next to you how you built that?” Or begin with: “I notice”. For example: "I notice that you used a lot of round pieces.”
Notice what the themes in the play. Do they link to other subject areas in the classrooms?

Gluing and Learning with Wood Scrap
“Building sculptures from wood blocks, shapes, knobs, and scraps is a process that is easily explored in the classroom, rich with learning opportunities, and highly engaging for children… Through a wood sculpture unit, children (students) may learn the names of local trees; the different leaves, acorns, pinecones, and seeds that each tree produces; the types and colors of wood; the softness or hardness of wood from various trees; the customary uses of wood in our culture; a wood’s suitability for sculpture or wood carving; the names of artists who use wood in their artwork."
