Ben Shahn and Dob Bosco Technical Academy

Who is Ben Shahn?
Ben Shahn was a Lithuanian-born American artist. He is best known for his works of social realism, his left-wing political views, and his series of lectures published as The Shape of Content.  In this well-known book LINK Shahn talks of the creation of the work of art, the importance of the community, the problem of communication, and the critical theories governing the artist and his audience. Althought their art work is very different, both Shahn and El Anatsui share an interest in the social and community aspects of artmaking and viewing.


Where was Ben Shahn born?
Ben Shahn (September 12, 1898 – March 14, 1969) was born in Lithuania and immigrated to the United State in 1906.  He then lived and worked in the US. The William Paterson art galleries are named after Ben Shahn as the building was constructed in the same year that Shahn died.  LINK  From the WPU website: "His (Ben Shahn's) legacy as the leading artist of social protest within American Art of the 20th century remains undisputed."


What does his artwork look like?
Some of Ben Shahn's works can be seen below.  He did many drawings, lithographs, woodcuts, and other forms of printmaking as well as painted murals. His engagement in social and political issues of his time are obvious with hiw work on Martin Luther King (top) and the Sacco and Venzetti trial (bottom).
What is the connection between Ben Shahn and Don Bosco Technical Academy?
On December 3, 2019 a feild trip to the Ben Shahn Galleries is planned for some of the students at Don Bosco to see this exhibition:

"In celebration of the University Galleries’ 40th anniversary, this exhibition commemorates Ben Shahn (1898-1969), who was perhaps the most important social-realist artist to have emerged in the early 1930s in the United States. Shahn is the namesake for our building, the Ben Shahn Center for the Visual Arts, and this exhibit will showcase works from WP’s art collection as well as loans from the public and private collections.  This exhibition is supported in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts." This field trip will include a trip to the galleries, a hands-on activity after the gallery tour, and on-going discussions with the curatorial staff.  Teachers who accompany their students on this trip will follow-up with an arts integration lesson back at Don Bosco.

El Anatsui and Don Bosco Technical Academy

Who is El Anatsui?
"El Anatsui is an internationally acclaimed artist who transforms simple materials into complex assemblages that create distinctive visual impact. He uses resources typically discarded such as liquor bottle caps, printing plates and cassava graters to create sculpture that defies categorization."  LINK

Where was El Anatsui born?
El Anatsui was born in 1944 in Ghana.  He lives and works in Nigeria. El Anatsui is a 
Professor of Sculpture at the University of Nigeria in Nsukka.

What does his artwork look like?
Here are some photographs of the large scale projects of El Anatsui.  These stunning works are made entirely with recycling materials.  They are also created with a team of many hands in a collaborative effort. Here is a fascinating video of the studio process of El Anatsui: LINK  El Anatsui's sculptures are mutable in form, conceived to be so free and flexible that they can be shaped in any way and altered in appearance for each installation. 
What is the connection between El Anatsui and Don Bosco Technical Academy?
Don Bosco Technical Academy in Paterson, NJ has been awarded an Arts Integration Grant from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation for the third year in a row.  For the fall of 2019, art teacher Patty Kamiski has been working with WPU Art PIR Triada Samaras and WPU PIR Robin O'Brien to create an all school, large-scale, collaborative art project inspired by El Anatsui that will be installed in the DB hallway later this year.

In addition, Ms. Kaminski is teaching a Memory Project with children from Nigeria in her art classroom in collaboration with social studies Teacher, Ms. Simmen.   LINK   Professors Samaras and O'Brien are working with a "STEAM Team" at Don Bosco, a cohort of interested teachers in all grades and content areas who wish to create arts integration lessons in their classrooms using the subject matter above.  These are teachers and who are able to do this according to the District Guidelines for their content areas.

Elementary Art Lesson Plan
STEAM Pendulum Painting
Objective: To understand Isaac Newton’s 1st Law of Motion, while visually seeing the effect of gravity on a moving object. Create a pattern using a spherical pendulum and predict how variables will change the look of the painting.

Materials:
  • Paper
  • Place to hang a pendulum
  • String
  • Metal washer
  • One large paperclip
  • Paint (mixed with equal parts water)
  • Small waxed paper cups
  • One sharp pencil
  • Newspaper for catching messes
  • Sharpie markers
  • Watercolor paint

Open the Conversation:
Start by discussing Newton’s 1st Law of Motion. Assemble the pendulum and ask students to predict what pattern it will make and what variables could affect it.
Step One:
Find a place to hang your pendulum string so that it is just above a flat surface with a string between 8 and 12 inches long.
Step Two:
Tie washer to your string.
Step Three:
Bend paperclip into a “W” shape and slip it onto the washer.

Step Four:
Poke a little hole in the bottom of a paper cup with a pencil.
Step Five:
Poke a hole on each side of the top of the cup and slip the paper clip through the holes to make a bucket on your pendulum.
Step Six:
Holding a finger over the hole on the bottom of the cup, grasp the cup and pour a bit of paint in the cup – it should be the consistency of ink.
Step Seven:
When releasing your cup, aim it at a slight curve so that it will travel in a circular direction.
Step Eight:
Once finished, keep the painting flat while drying.
Step Nine:
Plan out a picture to integrate with your spiral background using a cut-out of a drawing or a stencil to trace onto your paper in pencil. Trace with Sharpie for a bold outline.
Step Ten:
Paint in shapes and parts of the background to complete a colorful, complete work of art.
Note: If you have painted with acrylic-based paints, using water color over the paint will not disturb your spirals. If you have used tempera or other non-permanent paint, take care to go around the lines so they do not blur
